Reports to: Programs Manager 

Summary

The Coordinating Teaching Artist will play a critical role in delivering high-quality programming, refining curriculum, and supporting the Programs Department at a growing organization. While some administrative responsibilities may be performed remotely, this position is predominantly in-person and requires regular travel throughout LA County. The Coordinating Teaching Artist will facilitate workshops and provide support at various sites, including parks, schools, partner organizations, and institutions serving incarcerated individuals. They will also contribute to alumni engagement, program design, and impact evaluation to ensure organizational consistency and success.

Justice for My Sister is a nonprofit arts organization that trains women of color, nonbinary folks, and foster youth in filmmaking with gender equality and racial justice lens. We seek to provide artists of various ages and skill levels to transform stories marked by pain into stories of liberation. Responsibilities

Teaching & Facilitation (30%)

  • Lead classes and workshops at multiple sites each week for systems-impacted youth, intergenerational groups, sector leaders, and community members.
  • Utilize trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices to foster inclusive and engaging learning environments.
  • Evaluate and adapt lesson plans to ensure alignment with program goals and participant needs, using the experiential learning cycle.
  • Invest in students, learning their names, preferences and learning needs. 
  • Identify socio-emotional learning objectives for different classes and age ranges. 
  • Step in as a substitute Teaching Artist when needed.

Curriculum Development & Program Design (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Programs team to design, develop, and refine curricula.
  • Create adaptable lesson plan templates and materials for Teaching Artists to use across sites.
  • Pilot new workshops or programmatic initiatives, incorporating feedback to improve delivery.
  • Assist in designing new programs aligned with the organization’s strategic goals, including innovative projects and expansions.
  • Assist in updating teaching materials including slides, surveys and templates in support of the programs and teaching artist/facilitators. 
  • Review participant feedback (via surveys, interviews, observations, etc) to innovate programs and tailor curriculum based on community needs. 

Coordination & Administrative Support (20%)

  • Collect and organize Teaching Artist deliverables, such as participant logs, data, photography, other documentation, and lesson plans.
  • Ensure timely data entry and communication between Teaching Artists and administrative staff.
  • Provide feedback and mentorship to Teaching Artists to enhance the quality and consistency of their work.
  • Assist with scheduling workshops, events, and Teaching Artist assignments across sites.
  • Assist with processing invoices, reporting expenses, and supporting reimbursement efforts on our payment procurement system. 
  • Provide support to those in need of special modifications and accessibility for deliverables and deadlines. 

Alumni Support & Engagement (10%)

  • Track data from program alumni, including career pathways, educational progress, and community impact.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with alumni to foster ongoing engagement and support.
  • Incorporate alumni stories and feedback into program development and organizational storytelling.

Partner & Participant Engagement (10%)

  • Build and maintain relationships with site administrators, schools, and other partners.
  • Act as a representative of the organization during workshops, events, and community meetings.
  • Support outreach efforts to engage participants and ensure robust program attendance.
  • Gather and document impact stories from participants and alumni for marketing and grant proposals.

Grants Team Support & Impact Evaluation (10%)

  • Collaborate with the Grants Department to evaluate program impact and report on metrics of success.
  • Ensure accurate and timely collection of program data and documentation (photo and video) for grant proposals and reports.
  • Contribute to the development of impact stories that showcase the organization’s achievements.

Qualifications

  • Artistic Expertise: Demonstrated experience in filmmaking, storytelling, or a related art form.
  • Teaching Experience: 3+ years facilitating workshops or leading classes for diverse groups, including youth.
  • Administrative Skills: Strong organizational skills and ability to manage deliverables across multiple programs.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills, including mentoring and providing constructive feedback.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Commitment to trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
  • Flexibility: Ability to balance creative work with administrative tasks and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Mobility: Reliable transportation and ability to travel to multiple program sites weekly.

Justice for My Sister requires all staff periodically train in topics including nonprofit administration, data collection, JFMS organizational ethos and educational practices, racial justice, gender inclusivity and mindfulness.

Job Compensation & Payment schedule

$27 - 30/hour, commensurate with experience. This role is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and making personal contributions to a 403b retirement plan. 

  • 40 hours/week
  • Payroll is every two weeks
  • Sick, holiday and vacation time. 

This position has a trial period of 90 days.
