Key Components of which a Superintendent will be evaluated:
‐ EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION
Superintendents are responsible for keeping tabs on just about every aspect of a construction project. This requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.
‐ PROBLEM‐SOLVING SKILLS
Things go wrong on all construction projects. Superintendents must be able to identify problems early, document them and communicate them with their Foreman and/or other trade partners and be able to provide efficient/productive suggestions to solve the problem then document the results.
‐ EXPERIENCE
Superintendents must be open to continuous learning. Learning from successes and/or mistakes others have made as well as recognize those the Superintendents themselves have experienced then use that experience to help themselves and the company in the future.
‐ PROFFESSIONALISM
Superintendents set the tone of a project by displaying exceptional professionalism in how they treat and interact with others, handling correspondences professionally and keeping projects on pace.
‐ INITIATIVE
Because projects have so many moving parts, superintendents need to take initiative and plan ahead by creating work plans for the foremen and their teams, setting attainable goals for them to achieve, and even create contingency plans to maintain operational efficiency when faced with unexpected challenges.
‐ ABILITY TO WORK UNDER PRESSURE
One of the main challenges a superintendent faces is being pushed to complete a project with maximum efficiency for the least amount of money possible.
Superintendents need to be able to harness their abilities they've gained from their prior experiences, problem‐solving skills, initiative and resourcefulness as tension rises so they don't buckle under the pressure and let the project suffer.
‐ DELEGATING
A superintendent needs to master strategically delegating tasks. By being good at assessing subordinates and determining which team members are best suited to handle specific tasks, they can properly delegate the tasks to the proper personnel to help the project run with efficiency. On the other hand, a superintendent should make notes on which team members are not suited for said tasks and make notes for future instruction with those team members to help elevate their skillset.
